boiler

A functioning boiler makes minimal noise apart from a quiet humming/whirring sound. Naturally, the circulation of water through your system, as well as the heating of your water via the heat exchanger will cause some noises to come from your boiler. It’s also good to keep in mind that this is to varying degrees based on the make and model of your boiler - with some boiler systems designed to run whisper quiet.

The sound of your boiler system is a great indicator of your heating system’s health and it's always a good idea to listen in and notice any strange noises coming from your boiler.

Did you know that 1 in 6 boilers are unsafe?

According to the research carried out by the Gas Safe Register, a worrying 1 in 6 boilers inspected by Gas Safe engineers are unsafe! That’s why DC Heating, Plumbing & Renewables recommends an annual boiler service to ensure that your boiler is safe and catch any dangerous boiler faults early.

What's causing the noise?

The first step is to determine the source of the sound. Noises can be deceiving and can travel and echo through the heating system, so it is critical to determine whether it is a noisy boiler, radiator, or central heating pipe, as each of these can have different causes.

You should also look for a fault code on your boiler, as this could help to explain the noise it's making. Fault codes will be displayed on the boiler's digital display.

We've identified some common boiler noises that could indicate a problem, such as gurgling, vibrating, buzzing, banging, or whistling, below. Use the descriptions to determine the type of noise your boiler is making and how to repair it.

What noises from your boiler system should concern you?

We’ve gone over the usual sounds that your boiler makes - but what about the ones that you should be concerned about. Below we’ve listed common noises that faulty boiler systems often make:

Whistling

Whistling noises from your boiler system are often caused by trapped air in your boiler system. It can also be an indicator of a blockage or a loss of water pressure.

Kettling

A common cause of a kettling noise is build-up of limescale throughout your system. This restricts the flow of water and can cause overheating and steam to build up in your boiler system.

Gurgling

Gurgling can be an indicator of a frozen condensate pipe - a serious boiler issue that needs immediate attention from a Gas Safe heating engineer.

Clunking or banging

These kinds of noises from your boiler system are an indicator of limescale and debris within your system causing water to expand as it overheats and cause these unusual sounds.

If your boiler system is making any of the noises listed above, it’s highly recommended that you call in a Gas Safe registered boiler repair service to investigate the issue. Catching boiler issues early is the best way to stop boiler issues from developing into larger, more expensive issues.
